Hyperbaric oxygen and Fibromyalgia
A great new research study was released this year, showing an amazing benefit of hyperbaric oxygen for patients with fibromyalgia. What's exciting is that every patient achieved some benefit, not just 50% or 75%, but every patient.
It's rare to find a drug, vitamin, or modality that can achieve those results.
Why is Oxygen important?
Oxygen truly is life. We can go weeks without food, days without water, but only minutes without oxygen.
When we take a breath, oxygen diffuses through our lungs and attaches to our red blood cells. Then it is carried to our cells and burns the food we've eaten to create energy. Oxygen literally feeds every cell in our body.
Benefits of Oxygen:
-
More energy
-
Better brain function
-
Improved immune function
-
Decreased inflammation

Hyperbaric oxygen and Healing
One of the most common reasons for using hyperbaric in the hospital setting is for wound healing. Usually these are dramatic wounds, like extensive burns, that require more intense pressure and more concentrated oxygen. However, all wounds can benefit from more oxygen. We have seen faster wound healing in our chambers too: car accidents, broken bones, post surgery treatment, as well as athletes who want to boost post-workout muscle healing.
Oxygen also helps to decrease chronic infections. Bacteria, fungus, viruses all thrive in a low oxygen environment. By increasing oxygen saturation in the body, we can add one more tool to knocking out chronic infection like chronic fatigue, lyme disease, and some fungal infections.
How Does Hyperbaric Oxygen Work?
A hyperbaric oxygen treatment consists of an hour session in the chamber. The chamber is pressurized and you are breathing a higher concentration of oxygen. By pushing more oxygen into your cells, we decrease inflammation and give your cells more nutrition.

Hyperbaric oxygen and the Brain
Our brain is delicate, and therefore, well protected by our skull. A
few minutes without oxygen and the brain begins to die. Luckily, it
is also very sensitive to the benefits of hyperbaric treatment. Whether
it be a stroke, a traumatic brain injury, a concussion, autism, or many
other injuries to the brain, hyperbaric oxygen can bring some
amazing results. The brain it seems, has a special affinity for oxygen.
We see the greatest improvements with hyperbarics in those with some
level of brain involvement.
